Steeped in tradition but driven by innovation, Banks Construction is reshaping the worksite with an unexpected asset: decommissioned shipping containers. In this edition of Inside the Box, we explore how these once-seafaring steel giants have helped Banks Construction with their daily operations—delivering shelter, security, and branding at project sites across the Lowcountry.

Banks Construction, a third-generation, family-owned business, has been a cornerstone of South Carolina’s infrastructure for over 75 years. Known for its expansive work in asphalt paving, heavy civil site projects, and recycled material supply, Banks Construction has likely had a hand in the highways you travel every day. If you’ve driven along I-26, there’s a good chance you’ve passed one, or driven over, one of their many projects.

Affordable Storage, Project Branding & Wind & Watertight Shelter On The Jobsite

With worksites within a 90 miles radius of Charleston, SC, Banks Construction often finds itself working in environments where security and weather-resistance are crucial. This is where Eveon’s decommissioned containers come into play. Designed to endure months at sea, these containers are naturally suited to the unpredictable conditions of a construction site. They not only serve as storage for tools and equipment but provide secure, safe onsite shelter for workers and resources, making them a perfect fit for Banks’ needs.

“Function and safety are paramount for us,” Kayla Ryan Roberson – Communication’s Coordinator and Team Member of the Safety and People Group at Banks Construction Company.

“Our teams can be on location for months, exposed to the elements. These containers—built to withstand harsh oceanic conditions—are an ideal solution, keeping our equipment safe and providing shelter in areas where conventional storage isn’t feasible.”

Banks Construction is also making these containers part of their brand. Partnering with a local mural artist, John Reese, they’ve transformed the exterior of their Conex boxes into mobile billboards that not only display the company’s logo but also promote messages of safety. With slogans like “Please Slow Down,” and “Work Zone Safety,” these containers become high-impact reminders for passing drivers.

The decommissioned containers proved to not only allow the company to showcase their projects, but also to highlight their teams on the job site and help recruit crew.

2 to use.jpg “It is important to raise awareness that construction workers are out there working to bring safer roads to travelers. It’s extremely dangerous doing the work they do, and we hope the safety messages are a good call to action and reminder to slow down and do the speed limit.” Roberson shares.

These containers offer a trifecta of benefits for construction companies: storage, security, and marketing. By investing in a container instead of renting traditional storage, Banks is able to remind people to be careful when in a work zone and they serve as a sustainable awareness platform. Containers serve as multi-functional assets—onsite workshops, storage facilities, and highly visible branding tools, all in one.

In the construction industry where innovation often means faster machines or more advanced materials, Banks is demonstrating that a simple, repurposed shipping container can make a significant impact. Their approach to reusing containers highlights a shift in the construction world toward sustainable, resourceful solutions that add value not only to the company but also to the community.

Highlighting their team, proudly showcasing their projects and the emphasizing the safety of their workers is what is part of their success and continues to be part of Banks Construction’s BEST OF CLASS VISION.

Banks Construction is proving that the best solutions are sometimes right “inside the box”—combining the past with forward-thinking innovation.
